Pavane

Coming to iOS

An alarm clock that never starts.

Every other alarm begins in silence. Pavane holds a quiet, generative ambient piece across the whole night. At your wake time nothing switches on. The arrangement simply fills in around you.

A night with Pavane

  1. You set the alarm

    The music begins

A generative ambient bed starts the moment you set it, built from a texture you choose. It is synthesised in real time, so there is no loop point to hear and no track to run out.

  2. Through the night

    It never stops

Listening to music at bedtime has moderate-certainty evidence for better sleep quality.1 Those trials used 25 to 60 minutes and then silence. Pavane holds the bed until morning.

  3. At your wake time

    The arrangement wakes you

Nothing switches on, because nothing ever stopped. Piano, then chime bells, then a melody line enter above the bed you have been hearing for hours. What rises is not the volume. It is the density.

  4. After

You start the day inside it

People who wake to melodic sounds report less grogginess than people woken by harsh tones.2 No jolt to recover from. The piece just keeps playing, and so do you.

  1. Jespersen KV et al., Listening to music for insomnia in adults, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2022. 13 trials, 1,007 participants, moderate-certainty evidence on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The trials studied music at bedtime, not overnight playback.
  2. Mcfarlane SJ, Garcia JE, Verhagen DS, Dyer AG, Alarm tones, music and their elements: Analysis of reported waking sounds to counteract sleep inertia, PLOS ONE, 2020. A self-report questionnaire with 50 participants. It shows an association, not a cause, and Pavane makes no medical claim.

Why it matters

Even the gentle alarms begin in silence.

They wait in the dark, then fade a sound up from nothing. That first moment of audio is the thing that jolts you. Not the volume. The onset.

Pavane removes the onset. The sound has been in the room for hours. Every other alarm can only choose how loudly to interrupt you.

The music

Every sound in Pavane was written for it by ambient artist Starry Boy, who has released six ambient records for sleep and meditation. Nothing here is stock library audio, and nothing was licensed in.
